Ingredients
2 ripe bananas, sliced and frozen (about 200g or 7 ounces)
1 cup (150g or 5.3 ounces) frozen mixed berries (such as strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries)
1/2 cup (120ml) milk (dairy or non-dairy)
1/4 cup (60ml) orange juice
1 tablespoon honey or maple syrup, optional, for added sweetness
Optional toppings: Sliced fruits, granola, shredded coconut, chia seeds, or mini chocolate chips
Directions
- Prepare the frozen fruits:
Slice ripe bananas and place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet in a single layer. Add the mixed berries to the baking sheet. Place the baking sheet in the freezer and freeze the fruits for 2-3 hours or overnight until solid. - Blend the ingredients:
Once the fruits are frozen, transfer them to a blender. Add the milk, orange juice, and honey or maple syrup (if using). Blend on high speed until smooth and slushy. You may need to stop and scrape down the sides of the blender as needed. - Chill time:
If the mixture is too thin, transfer it to a bowl and place it in the freezer for 10-15 minutes to chill and thicken slightly. This will help achieve a slushy consistency. - Serve:
Once the slushy smoothie bowl has chilled to your desired consistency, remove it from the freezer. Pour the slushy mixture into serving bowls. - Add toppings:
Top the slushy smoothie bowls with your favorite toppings such as sliced fruits, granola, shredded coconut, chia seeds, or mini chocolate chips for added flavor and texture. - Enjoy:
Serve the slushy smoothie bowls immediately for a refreshing and satisfying breakfast or dessert option that’s perfect for your picky eater.
Top Tips to the MOST Delicious Smoothie Bowl
This is a pretty basic process, really – in terms of the steps to making a luscious smoothie blow. Having said that. Here’s how to whip up the best smoothie bowl possible:
- Frozen fruit: Use frozen fruit as the base of your smoothie bowl. Don’t skip this part of the recipe and use unfrozen fruit; the result won’t be the same. Frozen fruit not only adds thickness and creaminess to the smoothie but also eliminates the need for ice.
- Balanced flavors: In your smoothie bowl, aim for a balanced combination of sweet and tart flavors. Mix sweet fruits like bananas, mangoes, or berries with tangy fruits like pineapple or citrus to create a balanced taste profile.
- Liquid ratio: When blending your smoothie bowl, start with a small amount of liquid to achieve a thick and creamy consistency. Add more liquid as needed, but be careful not to overdo it. If your smoothie base is thin, it can turn your bowl into soup!
- Thickening agents: Use thickening agents if you need to, like yogurt, nut butter, avocado, or even frozen cauliflower (if you’re brave), to bring out the creaminess and texture of your smoothie bowl. This is a great way NOT to rely solely on ice cream or frozen yogurt for a thick texture.
- Nutrient boosters: Boost the nutritional value of your smoothie bowl by adding nutrient-dense ingredients like spinach, kale, chia seeds, flaxseeds, or protein powder. These additions not only add extra vitamins and minerals but also contribute to the overall texture and thickness of the bowl.
- Toppings galore: Get creative with toppings! Add a variety of toppings like fresh fruit slices, granola, nuts, seeds, coconut flakes, or even chocolate chips to add taste, texture, and good looks to your smoothie bowl.
- Make it pretty: Arrange your toppings on top of the smoothie bowl in an aesthetically pleasing way. Create patterns, swirls, or symmetrical designs to make your bowl extra fun.
- Texture contrast: Aim for a balance of textures in your smoothie bowl. Pair creamy smoothie bases with crunchy toppings to create an enjoyable contrast of textures that keeps each bite interesting.
- Serve immediately: Smoothie bowls are best enjoyed fresh and immediately after blending. Serve your smoothie bowl promptly to prevent it from melting or becoming too runny and ensure optimal flavor and texture.
