We’ve given a classic pudding a fun twist by serving it in mini jars, perfect for little hands. These Mini Apple Crumble Pots bring together soft, cinnamon-spiced apples topped with a golden, crunchy crumble. Apples are naturally rich in fibre and Vitamin C, making them a brilliant choice for children. The individual servings also make it easy for fussy eaters to enjoy just the right portion without feeling overwhelmed.

Ingredients

  • For the apple filling:

  • 3 medium apples, peeled, cored and chopped into small chunks

  • 1 tbsp soft brown sugar (optional, for extra sweetness)

  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon

  • ½ tsp of ground nutmeg

  • 1 tsp of vanilla

  • 1 tsp lemon juice

  • 2 tbsp water

  • For the crumble topping

  • 60g plain flour

  • 30g oats

  • 40g unsalted butter, chilled and cubed

  • 30g soft brown sugar

Directions

  • Preheat the oven to 180°C (fan 160°C) / Gas mark 4.
  • Place the chopped apples, lemon juice, water, cinnamon, and sugar (if using) in a small saucepan. Cook gently for 5–7 minutes until the apples start to soften.
  • Divide the apple mixture evenly between 4 small ovenproof jars or ramekins.
  • To make the crumble topping, place the flour and butter into a mixing bowl. Rub the butter into the flour using your fingertips until the mixture looks like breadcrumbs.
  • Stir in the oats and brown sugar.
  • Spoon the crumble mixture evenly on top of each apple pot.
  • Place the jars on a baking tray and bake in the oven for 15–20 minutes, until the topping is golden and crisp.
  • Allow to cool slightly before serving — the jars will be hot!

Key Notes

  • Fussy eater tip: Serve without cinnamon for children who prefer plainer flavours.
  • Crispy lovers: Add a few crushed cornflakes to the crumble topping for extra crunch.
  • Make ahead: You can prepare the apple filling in advance and keep it in the fridge for up to 2 days before baking.
  • Parent treat: Top with Greek yoghurt, custard, or a drizzle of warm caramel sauce for a grownup twist.

Variation Tips

Mix the Fruit: Try pears, peaches, or berries instead of (or with) apples for a fun flavour twist.

Add a Crunch: Sprinkle chopped nuts, seeds, or oats into the crumble topping for extra texture.

Spice It Up: A pinch of cinnamon, nutmeg, or even ginger can make the crumble feel extra warming.

Serve with a Side: Add a spoonful of yogurt, custard, or vanilla ice cream on top for a creamy finish.

Make It Mini-Mini: Bake in cupcake cases or silicone moulds for tiny bite-sized crumbles.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Overfilling the Pots: Apples release juice when baking. Leave a little space at the top so it doesn’t bubble over.

Skipping the Lemon Juice: A splash of lemon keeps apples from turning brown and balances sweetness.

Making the Crumble Too Fine: Overmixing can make the topping sandy instead of crunchy—keep some texture!

Not Baking Long Enough: The topping should be golden and crisp, and apples soft. If it’s pale, it’s underbaked.

Using Too Much Sugar: Apples are naturally sweet—taste them first and adjust sugar to avoid an overly sweet dessert.
