We’ve given the humble banana a playful twist with these Banana Choco Pops. Frozen banana chunks are dipped in melted chocolate and sprinkled with colourful toppings, creating a treat that feels like ice cream on a stick — but with less sugar and more natural sweetness. Bananas are rich in potassium for healthy energy release, while dark chocolate provides a touch of antioxidants. Perfect as a fun dessert, after-school snack, or a summer freezer staple.

Ingredients

  • 3 ripe but firm bananas

  • 1 tsp coconut oil (optional, for smoother melting)

  • 2 tbsp colourful sprinkles or crushed nuts, desiccated coconut, or dried fruit pieces • 6 lolly sticks or skewers

Directions

  • Peel the bananas and slice each one into two or three equal chunks.
  • Carefully insert a lolly stick or skewer into each banana piece.
  • Place the bananas on a tray lined with baking paper and freeze for at least 1 hour, or until firm.
  • Meanwhile, melt the chocolate gently in a heatproof bowl over simmering water (or in short bursts in the microwave). Stir in the coconut oil if using.
  • Dip each frozen banana piece into the melted chocolate, letting the excess drip off.
  • Sprinkle with your choice of toppings and place back onto the lined tray.
  • Freeze for a further hour until the chocolate has set. Serve straight from the freezer.

Keys Notes

  • For fussy eaters who dislike toppings, keep some plain chocolate-dipped pops — smooth and simple.
  • Swap sprinkles for crushed cereal to add a crunchy twist kids might love.
  • Make it a parent treat by drizzling with white chocolate or adding a pinch of sea salt to the melted chocolate.
  • These keep in the freezer for up to 2 weeks in an airtight container.
  • Can also be used with breadstick: Fussy eaters will love the crunchy twist.

Variation Tips

Try dipping bananas in dark chocolate for a richer taste, or milk chocolate if little ones prefer something sweeter.

Add sprinkles, crushed nuts, or shredded coconut for extra crunch and fun.

Freeze the bananas for a few hours before dipping if you want a refreshing, ice cream–like texture.

Common Mistakes

Adding too much chocolate coating can make them messy and hard to eat.

Skipping the freezer step can make the bananas too soft, which kids may find mushy.

Using overripe bananas might make them too sweet and less firm for dipping.
