We’ve given the humble fruit platter a fun makeover with these colourful skewers. Bite-sized pieces of fruit are threaded onto sticks and lightly dipped into smooth melted chocolate, creating a treat that feels indulgent yet still celebrates fresh fruit. Perfect for parties, after-school snacks, or as a fun dessert project to make with the kids. The chocolate adds just enough sweetness to tempt even the fussiest of eaters to try new fruit combinations.

Ingredients

  • 1 banana, sliced into chunks

  • 1 handful strawberries, hulled

  • 1 handful seedless grapes (red or green)

  • 1 kiwi, peeled and chopped into chunks

  • 100g dark or milk chocolate (whichever your child prefers)

  • Wooden skewers

  • Optional: sprinkles, desiccated coconut, or crushed nuts (for adults)

Directions

  • Wash and prepare all fruit, chopping into bite-sized pieces.
  • Thread the fruit pieces onto skewers, alternating colours to make them fun and eye-catching.
  • Break the chocolate into a heatproof bowl and melt gently over a pan of simmering water (or in the microwave in 30-second bursts). Stir until smooth
  • Dip each fruit skewer lightly into the melted chocolate, or drizzle the chocolate over the skewers with a spoon.
  • Place skewers on a tray lined with baking paper and leave in the fridge for 10 minutes to set.
  • Serve chilled or at room temperature.

Notes

  • For fussier eaters, keep some skewers plain (just fruit) and let them choose whether to dip in chocolate at the table.
  • Make it crispy by adding a sprinkle of puffed rice or crushed cornflakes on top before the chocolate sets.
  • Parents can enjoy a grown-up version with darker chocolate and a sprinkle of nuts or coconut.
  • Best eaten the same day, but plain fruit skewers can be kept in the fridge for up to 24 hours.

Variation Tips

Use dark, milk, or white chocolate for different flavors.

Add toppings like chopped nuts, shredded coconut, or colorful sprinkles.

Mix up the fruit: strawberries, bananas, pineapple, kiwi, and grapes work best.

Try drizzling contrasting chocolate over dipped fruit for a decorative finish.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Not drying fruit properly before dipping – chocolate won’t stick.

Overheating the chocolate – it can burn or become grainy.

Using watery fruit (like melon) – it may cause the chocolate to slide off.

Assembling too early – fruit juices can seep and make skewers messy if stored too long.
