Ingredients

  • 2 ripe bananas, mashed

  • 100g rolled oats

  • 1 tbsp ground flaxseed (optional, for added fiber)

  • ½ tsp cinnamon (optional)

  • 1 tbsp raisins or finely chopped soft dates (optional)

  • A pinch of salt

Directions

  • Preheat your oven to 180°C (160°C fan) or Gas Mark 4. Line a baking tray with parchment paper.
  • In a large bowl, mash the bananas until smooth.
  • Stir in the oats, flaxseed (if using), cinnamon, and a pinch of salt. Mix well until everything is fully combined.
  • Add the raisins or chopped dates if your child enjoys a little natural sweetness — or leave them out for a plainer bite.
  • Using clean hands or a teaspoon, scoop small bite-sized amounts and shape into rough balls or flattened discs.
  • Place onto the lined tray and bake for 15–18 minutes, or until just golden and firm to touch.
  • Allow to cool completely before serving.

Key Notes

  • These bites are naturally sweet from the banana — no need for added sugar.
  • Leave out the raisins for children who prefer a plainer taste or don’t like chewy textures.
  • If your child prefers things crispy, flatten them slightly more before baking for a crunchier finish.
  • Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days, or freeze in batches and defrost as needed.
  • A great breakfast for little hands, and perfect for parents with a cuppa too!
Variations to Try

Choco-Banana Bites – add a handful of dark chocolate chips for a treat.

Nutty Energy Bites – stir in peanut butter or almond butter for extra protein (skip if packing for nut-free schools).

Cinnamon Raisin Bites – mix in a sprinkle of cinnamon and a handful of raisins for a warm, spiced flavour.

Tropical Twist – add shredded coconut and a few chopped dried mango pieces.

Breakfast Boost – mix in chia seeds or flaxseeds for added fiber and omega-3s.

Berry Burst – fold in fresh or dried berries for a fruity variation.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Overloading with extras – While add-ins like chocolate chips or dried fruit are great, too many can stop the mixture from holding together.

Using underripe bananas – Green or just-yellow bananas don’t provide enough sweetness or softness. Always use ripe or even slightly overripe bananas for the best flavor and texture.

Adding too much liquid – Over-mashing bananas or adding milk can make the bites soggy instead of chewy. Keep the mixture thick.

Overbaking – These bites are meant to be soft, not crunchy cookies. Take them out as soon as they’re set and lightly golden.

Skipping oats variety – Using instant oats can make them mushy. Rolled oats give a better bite and texture.
