We’ve reimagined the classic potato tot with a plant-based twist. These Cheesy Cauliflower Tots are bite-sized, golden, and deliciously crisp on the outside, while soft and cheesy on the inside. Cauliflower is a brilliant source of vitamin C and fibre, and when paired with dairy-free cheese, you get that irresistible flavour kids love — without the fuss. Perfect for after-school snacks, lunchboxes, or as a side dish that little hands will happily grab.

Ingredients

  • 1 medium cauliflower (about 500g florets), steamed until tender

  • 60g dairy-free grated cheese

  • 50g breadcrumbs (use gluten-free if needed)

  • 2 tbsp ground flaxseed mixed with 6 tbsp water (flax “egg”)

  • 1 tsp garlic powder (optional, for extra flavour)

  • ½ tsp salt

  • ½ tsp black pepper

  • Olive oil spray (for baking)

Directions

  • Preheat the oven to 200°C (180°C fan) and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
  • Place the steamed cauliflower florets into a food processor and pulse until finely chopped (but not puréed).
  • In a large bowl, combine the cauliflower with the flax “egg,” dairy-free cheese, breadcrumbs, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix well until the mixture holds together.
  • Using your hands, shape small spoonfuls of the mixture into mini tot shapes.
  • Arrange on the baking tray, leaving a little space between each tot. Lightly spray with olive oil.
  • Bake for 20–25 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden and crisp.
  • Serve warm as a snack, side, or lunchbox filler.

Key Notes

  • Extra crispy: For fussier eaters who prefer crunch, roll the tots in extra breadcrumbs before baking.
  • No cheese lovers: Skip the cheese and add a pinch of nutritional yeast for a savoury flavour.
  • Parent upgrade: Serve yours with a smoky chipotle dip or spicy ketchup for extra kick.
  • Freezer-friendly: Cool completely and freeze in a bag for up to 2 months. Reheat in the oven to keep crispy.

Variation Tips

Swap cheddar for mozzarella, or add grated carrot for extra hidden veggies.

Common Mistakes

Not squeezing out enough moisture from cauliflower makes tots soggy.
