Let your little ones take control at dinnertime with these Build-Your-Own Dinner Wraps. This recipe is all about fun, choice, and gentle flavours – perfect for fussy eaters. We use tender strips of mild chicken and lightly roasted veggies, served alongside soft wraps and simple toppings so children can pick and mix what they love. Great for encouraging independence and exploring textures and tastes in a stress-free way.

Ingredients

  • 2 skinless chicken breasts, cut into thin strips

  • 1 tbsp olive oil

  • 1 tsp mild paprika (optional)

  • 1 small courgette, thinly sliced

  • 1 red pepper, deseeded and sliced

  • 1 small carrot, grated or peeled into ribbons

  • 4–6 soft mini tortilla wraps

  • 50g grated mild cheddar (optional)

  • 1 small tin sweetcorn, drained

  • A handful of shredded lettuce or baby spinach

  • Optional: plain yoghurt or hummus for dipping

  • Salt & pepper to taste (leave out or use lightly if serving toddlers)

Directions

  • Preheat the oven to 200°C (fan 180°C / Gas Mark 6).
  • Place the chicken strips on one half of a baking tray. Drizzle with olive oil, sprinkle with paprika (if using), and toss to coat.
  • Place the chicken strips on one half of a baking tray. Drizzle with olive oil, sprinkle with paprika (if using), and toss to coat.
  • Add the sliced courgette and red pepper to the other side of the tray, drizzle with a little oil, and season lightly if preferred.
  • Roast for 15–18 minutes, turning once, until the chicken is cooked through and the veg is tender.
  • Meanwhile, warm the wraps in a dry pan or oven for a few minutes until soft.
  • Arrange all the ingredients separately on a large plate or board — cooked chicken, roasted veg, grated carrot, sweetcorn, lettuce, cheese, and optional dips.
  • Let the kids build their own wrap, choosing their favourite bits!

Key Notes

  • Sauce-Free Zone: Many fussy eaters prefer dry food, so keep sauces on the side for dipping rather than mixing in.
  • Crunch Factor: Toast the wraps slightly longer if your child prefers crispy textures.
  • Veg Swap: Try swapping the courgette or pepper for green beans, peas, or cucumber if your child has firm favourites.
  • Parent Treat Idea: Spice up your own portion with a smoky chipotle mayo or add avocado and chilli flakes for a grown-up twist.

Variation Tips

Swap cheddar for mozzarella or parmesan for a flavour twist.

Add courgette, sweet potato, or spinach for extra hidden veg.

Make gluten-free with GF breadcrumbs.

Bake or air fry for a lighter option.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Too many wet veggies = soggy nuggets.

Skipping chilling = nuggets may fall apart.

Overcrowding the pan/air fryer = no crispy edges.

Not seasoning enough = bland flavour.
