We’ve given the classic milkshake a sophisticated twist with our Espresso Mocha Shake. This creamy, chocolatey indulgence blends together the richness of cocoa with the bold kick of freshly brewed espresso, making it the perfect pick-me-up for adults. The combination of coffee and chocolate creates a naturally balanced flavour — bitter and sweet, smooth and decadent — without being overpowering. It’s a quick treat that feels like a café-style luxury, made right at home for busy parents.

Ingredients

  • 1 shot (30ml) freshly brewed espresso, cooled 2 tbsp cocoa powder or chocolate syrup

  • 2 scoops dairy-free vanilla or chocolate ice cream

  • 250ml chilled plant-based milk (almond, oat, or soya)

  • 1 tbsp maple syrup or agave (optional, for sweetness)

  • Ice cubes (optional, for a thicker shake)

  • Whipped dairy-free cream and grated dark chocolate, to serve (optional)

Directions

  • Brew the espresso and allow it to cool slightly.
  • Add the espresso, cocoa powder (or chocolate syrup), ice cream, and plant-based milk to a blender.
  • Blend until smooth and creamy. Taste, and add maple syrup if you’d like more sweetness.
  • For a thicker shake, add a few ice cubes and blend again.
  • Pour into tall glasses, top with whipped cream and grated chocolate if desired, and serve immediately.

Key Notes

  • For a stronger coffee flavour, use a double shot of espresso.
  • Add a frozen banana to make it creamier and naturally sweet.
  • To make it extra indulgent, drizzle chocolate syrup around the inside of the glass before pouring.
  • This shake is best enjoyed fresh and chilled — perfect as an afternoon energy boost

Variation Tips for Fussy Eaters or Lighter Preferences

Remove the coffee– keeps the flavour without the caffeine buzz.

Add banana or oats – for a creamy, natural sweetness.

Make it dairy-free – swap to almond, oat, or coconut milk.

Turn it into a dessert shake – drizzle chocolate syrup and add whipped cream.

Protein version – add chocolate protein powder for an energizing breakfast shake.

Frozen coffee cubes – replace ice for richer flavour without dilution.

Common Mistakes To Avoid

Using hot espresso – melts ice and ruins the creamy texture.

Overpowering with coffee – can make the shake too bitter.

Skipping quality chocolate – low-quality cocoa dulls the mocha flavour.

Adding too much ice – makes the shake watery and thin.

Not balancing sweetness – both coffee and chocolate need the right amount of sugar or syrup.

Using warm milk – affects the consistency and frothiness.

Over-blending – can cause separation and foam instead of a smooth shake.
