minutesWe’ve put a fun twist on pizza night with our DIY Mini Pizza Faces. These muffin-base pizzas are the perfect size for little hands and even fussier appetites. Using soft wholemeal English muffins, children can decorate their own mini pizzas using toppings they actually enjoy — which gives them ownership and encourages them to eat! You can keep it dry with cheese-only options or add a smooth tomato base for those who like a bit of sauce. Packed with calcium, fibre and veggie goodness (if you sneak a few extras on), this is an ideal lunch or easy dinner for little ones.
Ingredients
4 wholemeal English muffins, halved
4 tbsp tomato passata (optional)
100g grated mild cheddar cheese
4–6 cherry tomatoes, sliced
1 small red pepper, thinly sliced
1 handful sweetcorn (tinned or frozen and thawed)
4 slices of cooked ham or chicken, chopped (optional)
Black olives, sliced (for eyes or smiles – optional)
Olive oil spray (optional)
Directions
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (fan) / 200°C / Gas Mark 6. Line a baking tray with parchment paper.
- Split the English muffins in half and place them cut-side up on the tray. Lightly spray with olive oil if desired for a crispier base.
- If using sauce, spread ½ tbsp tomato passata onto each muffin half. If not, skip this step.
- Sprinkle a generous layer of grated cheese over each base.
- Set out bowls of prepared toppings and let your child decorate their own “pizza face” — think olive eyes, tomato noses, sweetcorn freckles, and red pepper smiles!
- Bake in the oven for 10–12 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Let cool slightly before serving.
Notes
- No-sauce fans? These taste just as great cheese-only — just skip the tomato step for a drier, crispier snack.
- Keep it crispy by toasting the muffin halves slightly before adding toppings.
- Fussy eater bonus: Letting your child choose their own toppings makes them far more likely to eat what they’ve created.
- Storage: Leftovers can be kept in the fridge for up to 2 days and reheated in the oven or air fryer to crisp back up.
Variation Tips
Use different bases: mini tortillas, pittas, bagels, or English muffins.
Swap tomato sauce for pesto, cream cheese, or hummus.
Try a rainbow of toppings: peppers, sweetcorn, olives, mushrooms, spinach.
Let kids pick their own toppings – they’ll be more likely to eat it.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Overloading toppings – pizzas won’t cook evenly.
Using too much sauce – can make bases soggy.
Forgetting to pre-bake thick bases – they might stay doughy inside.
Cutting toppings too large – small, bite-sized pieces work best for kids.
