We’ve turned a simple banana milkshake into something extra special with our Banana Caramel Swirl. Naturally sweet bananas are blended until silky smooth with chilled milk, then rippled with a light homemade caramel sauce. Bananas are packed with potassium and fibre, while the caramel drizzle adds just enough indulgence to make this a real treat for little ones and adults alike. It’s the perfect balance of healthy and sweet in a glass!

Ingredients

  • 2 ripe bananas, sliced and frozen for 1–2 hours

  • 250ml chilled milk (dairy or plant-based)

  • ½ tsp vanilla extract

  • 1–2 scoops vanilla ice cream (optional, for extra creaminess) For the caramel swirl:

  • 2 tbsp soft brown sugar

  • 1 tbsp butter (or plant-based alternative)

  • 2 tbsp milk (dairy or plant-based)

Directions

  • First, make the caramel swirl: in a small saucepan, gently melt the sugar and butter together.
Add the milk and stir until smooth. Remove from the heat and allow to cool slightly.
  • In a blender, add the frozen bananas, milk, vanilla extract, and ice cream (if using). Blend until smooth and creamy.
  • Drizzle a little caramel sauce around the inside of two tall glasses.
  • Pour in the banana shake, then drizzle more caramel on top to create a ripple effect.
  • Serve immediately with a straw or spoon to swirl the caramel through.

Key Notes

  • For a lighter version, skip the ice cream and use frozen bananas only — it still turns out creamy.
  • If your child prefers less sweetness, reduce the caramel drizzle and let the banana’s natural flavour shine.
  • Parents can make it extra indulgent by adding a pinch of sea salt to the caramel for a salted caramel twist.
  • Best served fresh, but you can freeze banana slices in advance to make this shake quickly anytime.

Variation Tips

Add a scoop of peanut butter for a nutty twist.

Blend in chocolate chips or drizzle chocolate syrup for a banoffee-style shake.

Use salted caramel sauce for a sweet-salty balance.

Swap vanilla ice cream for caramel or banana ice cream to boost flavour.

Make it lighter with frozen bananas and milk only (no ice cream).

Common Mistakes to Avoid

They make the shake bland and starchy—always use ripe, spotty bananas.

Overpowering sweetness can mask banana flavour.

Can make the shake too thin—blend just until creamy.

Bananas can oxidize and affect colour if left too long.

Blending caramel fully into the shake loses the pretty “swirl” effect.
